What are some fun family gatherings with friends to do over the holidays?

I love to have parties and usually have a holiday party but this year, since my son doesn't love big crowds at our house, I thought I would try to find something else to do/organize with some of our friends where the kids (mostly toddlers) and parents would enjoy. Any suggestions? I was thinking of a lunchtime Saturday thing in December but not sure where. Thanks.
